Emulsified Asphalt (Emulsion)

Precautions for Storage and Use of Emulsified Asphalt

  • 1. Products with well-controlled quality control during production can be stored for long periods.
Products with a storage stability of 3% or less can be stored for at least three months, and those with a stability of 1% or less can be stored for at least one year.
  • 2. Special care must be taken during cold weather storage. Freeze at approximately -4°C or below.
If temperatures fall below freezing, store indoors and keep warm at +5°C or above using blankets such as kava straw.
  • 3. Decomposition occurs when mixed with moisture, so make sure that rainwater or moisture does not enter the container during storage.
  • 4. If the pump is difficult to operate due to separation of the oil inside the pump caused by a long-term stoppage, the pump is operated by slightly heating it with a gas burner or similar device from the outside.
  • 5. When filling (or suctioning) the distributor's tank, use a sieve (1.2m cylindrical) to prevent small stones, debris, etc. from entering, thereby preventing clogging of the pump and nozzle.
  • 6. When spraying, care must be taken to avoid mixing the milk with other varieties (such as cutback asphalt).
  • 7. The principle is to spray the emulsion at room temperature, but if spraying is difficult due to low temperatures, it is convenient to use it after slightly heating it (below 60°C).
  • 8. When using a drum product that has been stored in one place for a long time, roll or shake the drum and then open the cap before using.
(Same as when using cutback asphalt products)
  • 9. When cationic and anionic emulsions are mixed, their electrical charges are neutralized, causing separation into asphalt and water.
As a result, the asphalt phase precipitates; therefore, special care must be taken.
  • 10. After work is completed, pumps, nozzles, hoses, etc. must be thoroughly washed with kerosene or water.

Advantages of Asphalt Pavement

Low cost of paving.

  • Emulsion asphalt is cheaper than cutback asphalt.
  • The shorter construction period reduces labor and management costs.
  • Room-temperature construction saves on heating equipment and fuel costs.

Shortened construction time.

  • Shorter curing time than conventional cutback asphalt, shortening construction time.
  • Construction is possible even on wet aggregates.
  • Traffic can be opened immediately after construction.

There is no risk of fire or pollution.

The construction method and equipment are relatively simple, and it can be used on narrow roads.

Cationic emulsified asphalt

Emulsified asphalt is a dark brown solution manufactured by dispersing and mixing asphalt in water in the form of fine particles using a special emulsifier.
Emulsified asphalt is divided into cationic emulsified asphalt and anionic emulsified asphalt depending on its properties. Cationic emulsified asphalt is widely used due to its storage stability and excellent adhesiveness.
